How To De-Stress Before A Driving Test

Being nervous is normal and we all struggle with anxiety from time to time.

Will she say yes to an evening out with me?

How will he react when I give him the news?

I wonder if I’ll be selected for that job!

However, it affects some people more than others. Learning how to drive can be an adventure of a lifetime, but it can be a daunting experience if you know nothing about cars and where to start.

But don’t worry, remember that you don’t have to be perfect on the first day and everything is a learning process. The important thing is to be attentive and listen to the instructor, and the rest will come easy!

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the ways you can combat anxiety and stress before your first lesson:

Write Down Your Fears

What are you scared of? Is something bothering you? Write it down!

Are you scared of being scolded for not knowing what to do on your first day? Are you scared of messing up? Whatever your fears are, writing them down will help you understand them better.

You’ll also realize that all the things you are scared of are normal and that your instructor is there to help you, not make things worse.

Research, Research, Research!

Look into all that you need to know about cars and driving in general. You should also look into the laws by visiting the Alberta Ministry of Transportation’s website. In Canada, there are different levels of driver’s license.


You will first start with Class 7 and then move onto Class 5. Other classes are awarded to commercial drivers and medical experts.

Also check out traffic safety laws so that you’re prepared when your instructor asks you questions.

Use a Driving Simulator

A driving simulator can help you relax and give you a “real-life” feel of what to expect. Once you get the hang of it, you won’t be as nervous anymore. In fact, driving simulators are used by driving schools to help make the experience more comfortable.

Breathing Exercises Are Your Friend

Do some breathing exercises to calm your nerves. This will also ease your muscles and help you take control of the steering wheel. If you’re tensed, your muscles become stiff and that can interfere with your driving and concentration.

Inhale for 3–4 seconds and then exhale. Repeat for a few minutes and make sure you do this before you leave for your first lesson.
